This is an easy, cheap and quick recipe for homemade croutons. You’ll save money by using leftover bread you have on hand, or you can purchase day-old bread at the bakery. (from the bakery department of the grocery store)
This is one of the recipes that are BETTER with day-old bread. Slightly stale or dry bread will toast up very nicely. Almost any kind of bread can be used, so you can add a lot of variety to your soups and salads. Bread with larger holes/nooks/crannies will hold the seasoning very well.
These croutons are delicious on top of chef or cobb salad, homemade soups, and can even replace traditional garlic bread on top of spaghetti. Adding croutons to spaghetti is never something you would do with hard store-bought croutons, but since you’re making these yourself at home, you control the crustiness. These croutons can feel and taste more like home-baked garlic bread.
Skillet croutons: Cube up some day-old bread, toss in a tiny amount of olive oil, season with garlic salt and herbs, toast in a skillet on medium-low heat.
