It’s fall! Time to grab a warm cup of tea and cozy up to some favorite fall sewing projects.

One of the best things about fall is the dramatic change of color this season brings. We go from shades of green and pastels and cool colors of summer to the vibrant oranges, reds, and golds backed with more muted rust, sage, and brown.
And that can be very fun for sewing, too!
Fall is a great time for sewing home decor since it’s a great season to give home a refreshed theme. About the time of fall cleaning is when we can pull out our comfy fall pillows, hang a new porch sign or flag, and break out the fall tablecloth or placemats.
Things You Can Sew for Fall
I’ve gathered, like an armfull of leaves or a cozy blanket, a collection of great autumn sewing projects that will get your fall sewing off to a great start.
Kitchen Curtains

Once, a wonderful Hobby Lobby employee in the fabric department told me she sews new kitchen curtains for every season. When I heard that, a light dawned and my eyes were opened to the possibilities! I love that idea, and at the moment I live in a home with a kitchen window! Now is my moment! And FALL is the time to sew them. Angie Holden of The Country Chic Cottage has this tutorial for how to sew cafe style curtains.
Fall Flannel Blanket Sewing Project

Here’s such a neat looking and cozy sewing project for fall: the Easy Flannel Fringe Blanket from Girl Inspired. It does look simple and she says anyone can do it. My question is where can I find nice flannel like that these days?
Fabric Pumpkins

The ubiquitous fabric pumpkin bowl fillers fill the Internet this time of year. There are a few different ways to make them, but this fabric pumpkin tutorial from Aubree Originals uses one of the easiest methods. It’s a couple rectangles of fabric, some stuffing, and a little bit of sewing. Fun, easy project!
Fall Leaf Coasters

I was so inspired one year by the fall leaf coasters my friend had out for a big fellowship party. She told me her mother made them and let me borrow one to figure out how to imitate the pattern. It took me a little trial and error, but I finally came up with something that I thought approximated her mom’s beautiful handiwork. My fall leaf coaster sewing pattern is the result. Hopefully the free pdf pattern and instructions will save you the trial and error.
Fabric Pumpkin Coasters
In keeping with my usual theme of quick and easy sewing projects for different seasons (of life and of the year), I came up with my own design for simple but cute fabric coasters shaped like pumpkins. I’ll share as soon as I get the pictures done!
Easy Fall Table Runner Pattern

You can get really ambitious and make a gorgeous pieced quilted table runner, but you don’t have to. You could transform this simple spring table runner from Back Road Bloom into a fall sewing project simply by choosing a different seasonal fabric.
When I stopped by the local quilt shop the other day, I saw so many enticing kits that provide all the fabric and most of the supplies I would need to make a treasured heirloom. However, I know my time constraints as we ramp up toward the holiday season, so I try to find the easiest fall table runner pattern that is quick to make but still brings a homemade style to my table.
Scrappy Sunflower Wall Art

While it’s not specifically a sewing project, it does involve cutting fabric and making a fall design, so I’m including it in the list of fall sewing ideas. (Also because I love it and want to make one for myself.) Here is a sunflower art piece made from fabric scraps and other chunksy fall media by Lizzy and Erin.
Fall Throw Pillow Covers to Make

This Fall Tree Pillow Cover from Cluck, Cluck Sew is one of the most inspiring fall sewing ideas I’ve seen this year, and I will probably make it. I love everything about it – the shape of the leaves, the simplicity of the trunk, the scrappiness of the pattern – and I am almost positive I have the scraps to make it with. I might be done with it by next spring.
Decorative Autumn Banner Sewing Ideas

I love the look of this Autumn Acorn Banner made by Kim at Crafting Cheerfully. The fabrics she chose – which remind me a lot of grandpa shirts and jeans – work perfectly to blend these fall colors into something cheerful for your home decor. Question: Where would you hang a banner of hand-sewn acorns like these? A mantle is an obvious choice if you have one. I think I’ll hang them over the entrance to my dining area.
Autumn Leaf Garland Sewing Idea

Here’s another idea for a banner or garland for fall that brings nature indoors and into your sewing room! This fabric autumn leaf garland from Polka Dot Chair looks like a simple and elegant sewing project, as well as a great way to use beautiful leftover fabric scraps from larger fall sewing projects.
I hope this collection of simple fall sewing projects inspire you to bring something handmade and cozy into your home decor this autumn!
