I had a hankering for sour cream and onion dip to go with my celery today, and all I had was plain sour cream. And green onions!
So I had an idea. What if I just make my own fresh green onion dip? Spoiler: It tasted soooo good, I had to immediately write up the recipe here so I wouldn’t forget about it.
(I also discovered the internet already had 18 zillion recipes for green onion dip, sometimes also called “spring onion dip.” Well, here’s one more…)

Tips for Making Homemade Green Onion Dip
Mincing the green onion is really the hardest part. You can find herb choppers online or just use a good sharp knife to slice each green onion longwise down the middle, then make teeny little slices. It’s only two green onions, so not a longterm commitment.
Or, I discovered you can cut the white part into smaller pieces and put it in your garlic press, which you already have out because you’re mincing garlic anyway!
Letting the sour cream and onion dip sit in the refrigerator overnight increases the intensity of the flavors. But waiting twelve hours before you eat it isn’t easy!
Serve with plain potato chips, cut celery, or even on top of a baked potato. Mmm!
Ingredient Substitutions for Green Onion Dip Recipe
Missing an ingredient to make sour cream and green onion dip? Here are easy & quick substitutions. (You might even like the results better, but I doubt it!)
- Use dry onion soup mix instead of fresh ingredients. Use one to two tablespoons per 16-oz. container of sour cream. (Obviously, start with one tablespoon and add more if you would like a stronger onion taste.)
- Substitute 1 teaspoon of onion powder for the minced green onion.
- Substitute 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder or 1/2 teaspoon jarred minced garlic for the fresh garlic.
- Try replacing at least some of the salt with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce for a tasty, lower-sodium variation.
- You can replace about half a cup of sour cream with mayonnaise if you would like.
- You can substitute caramelized onions for green onions, but it obviously takes longer and means you have to wash a pan later.
Secret Ingredients You Can Use in Your Homemade Sour Cream and Onion Dip
I minced up fresh celery to add to my green onion dip, and the results were incredible. I also added about 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. I didn’t include these directly in the list of ingredients because I think the dip is absolutely wonderful without them, and I’m not trying to overcomplicate things.
The fun part of making homemade things in your own kitchen is experimenting with tastes and flavors you like, so feel free to try your own “secret ingredient!” Here is a list of possibilities:
- onion powder
- dried minced onion
- onion soup mix
- soy sauce (reduce the salt if you add this)
- garlic
- garlic powder
- dried garlic flakes
- mayonnaise
- shallots
- chives
- celery seed
- minced celery
- black pepper
- parsley
- dill
- sugar
- thyme
